Nuvei has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) as one of the first providers to offer merchants the Wero digital mobile wallet for online checkouts.
Launched late last year, Wero aims to leverage account-to-account (A2A) payments to enable European banks to compete with Visa and Mastercard. It has already enrolled 40 million users across its initial markets. The platform allows A2A transfers using SEPA Instant Credit Transfer protocols, enabling users to send money within 10 seconds via phone numbers, email addresses, or QR codes.
With Nuvei’s membership, businesses can start offering Wero as a payment option in online checkouts from September. A recent agreement with Nexi will connect German merchants to Wero as well.
EPI is also working on integrating buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) and loyalty programs to enhance the digital wallet experience for Europeans.
Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, stated, “By making Wero available to Nuvei’s extensive merchant network, we’re accelerating the adoption of a truly European payment solution that enhances financial sovereignty while delivering a seamless, easy, and innovative experience for consumers and businesses alike.”
