UBS Invests in Swiss Open Quantum Institute to Support UN Sustainability Objectives

UBS has partnered with CERN, the Swiss Government, and the non-profit foundation Gesda to finance innovative experiments in quantum computing, with a focus on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Under the initiative named the ‘Open Quantum Institute’ (OQI), the collaboration aims to leverage the capabilities of quantum computing to tackle some of the most urgent global challenges, including those in the areas of health, energy, climate change, access to clean water, and food security.

As a principal partner of the OQI, UBS plans to contribute up to CHF 2 million each year along with providing strategic insights over the coming years. Christian Bluhm, the Group Chief Risk Officer, will also serve on the foundation’s Advisory Board.

Bluhm expressed enthusiasm about UBS’s role, stating, “We are honored to be selected as a leading partner of the OQI and to facilitate the integration of scientific research, business, and government for the greater good. The potential of new technologies is crucial in crafting solutions to the significant challenges we face as a society. Utilizing quantum computing to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals is a significant milestone toward achieving a more sustainable future.”
