Swedish Central Bank Reports Ransomware Attack on IT Firm to Authorities

Sweden’s Riksbank has reported a ransomware attack on Tietoevry, a software firm, which has resulted in the shutdown of some of the central bank’s IT systems.

According to Bloomberg, the Riksbank’s human resources and payroll systems have been unavailable since the attack on Tietoevry’s data center in Sweden nearly a week ago. The incident, attributed to the Akira ransomware gang, has impacted various clients of Tietoevry.

In a recent statement, Tietoevry noted that “customer-specific situations vary greatly, for example in terms of the solutions in question, customer-specific workloads, and the volume and complexity of related data restoration.” The firm added that some situations may require additional restoration efforts, which are being coordinated closely with affected customers.

Ransomware attacks have seen a significant increase in recent months, with the securities lending trading platform EquiLend alerting clients this week that its services could be unavailable for several days following a cyberattack.
