Starling Secures Largest Engine Deal with Canada’s Tangerine Bank

Starling Bank has secured a ten-year agreement to implement its core banking software, Engine, at Tangerine Bank—Canada’s digital banking division of the Bank of Nova Scotia.

With the integration of Engine’s SaaS platform, Tangerine’s two million customers will gain access to features like digital onboarding, checking accounts, instant-access savings, overdraft services, debit cards, and advanced money management tools, all delivered through an intuitive mobile application.

On the operational side, Engine’s comprehensive platform will offer a streamlined account overview and consolidate the necessary support tools for Tangerine, ultimately enhancing efficiency and reducing costs for employees.

This partnership marks Engine’s inaugural entry into the North American market, following the firm’s recent establishment of offices in New York and Toronto. Engine currently supports clients such as Salt Bank in Romania and AMP Bank GO in Australia.

Sam Everington, CEO of Engine by Starling, remarked, “Engine’s technology and operating model represent a proven framework for developing leading digital banks. Our software is a testament to fintech innovation, empowering ambitious and customer-focused banks worldwide. This partnership with Tangerine signifies a major milestone and stands as our largest agreement to date.”

Tangerine, originally known as ING Direct, underwent a rebranding following its acquisition by Scotiabank for C$3.1 billion in 2012.
