Saudi Researchers Develop World’s Fastest Quantum Random Number Generator

Research scientists at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) have announced the development of the fastest quantum random number generator (QRNG) to date, measured against international benchmarks.

KAUST and KACST assert that their new QRNG operates nearly 1,000 times faster than existing generators and is significantly smaller in size. This breakthrough holds transformative potential for data management and cybersecurity within the financial services sector, as random number generators are essential for cryptographic keys that encrypt and secure sensitive data.

These keys play a critical role in maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of sensitive information, making the quality of random number generation vital for securing online transactions, communications, and data storage. Current random number generators exhibit vulnerabilities due to fundamental design flaws.

Professor Boon Ooi from KAUST explains that “most random number generators are ‘pseudo random number generators’. They appear random but are based on complex algorithms that can be solved. In contrast, QRNGs do not face this issue.”

QRNGs utilize quantum mechanics to generate truly unpredictable random numbers. The innovation from these Saudi universities focused on both the fabrication of the device and its post-processing algorithms.

The fastest QRNG is constructed using micro-LEDs (light-emitting diodes) only a few micrometers in size, reducing energy demands and enhancing portability, thus broadening potential applications. The National Institute of Standards and Technology provides benchmarks to evaluate the quality of randomness.

Dr. Abdullah Almogbel, a researcher at the Microelectronics and Semiconductors Institute and director of the Center of Excellence for Solid-State Lighting at KACST, emphasizes KACST’s commitment to advancing applied research that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, particularly in establishing leadership in quantum-enabled innovations. This research is expected to generate significant value across various industries and bolster their global standing.
