Santander Unveils Screen Sharing Detection Technology

Santander UK has introduced a new mobile app feature designed to protect customers from scammers using screen sharing technology. This screen sharing detection technology automatically blurs the customer’s mobile screen, preventing any banking actions when such technology is detected on their device.

Data from Santander indicates that over £1.8 million was stolen from customers in 2024 due to scams involving screen sharing and remote access methods to gather money or personal information. Scammers often reach out unexpectedly through phone calls, emails, or text messages, presenting false investment opportunities or warning of supposed technical issues with the customer’s phone. They typically persuade victims to download trusted screen-sharing software like AnyDesk or TeamViewer, which then provides access to mobile screens and sensitive information, including banking credentials.

Chris Ainsley, head of fraud strategy at Santander UK, stated, “As technology advances, so do scammers. We provide specific warnings for our customers, but these criminals are adept at manipulating situations to access personal information. Our latest development addresses social engineering in real-time, safeguarding customers who may find themselves in a moment of panic.”
