Research Reveals Increase in Online Stock Trading Activity

Online searches for ‘stock trading tips’ and ‘how to start trading’ have surged by over 200% since 2004, according to recent data.

Research by UK financial services company CMC Markets indicates a growing interest in online trading, reflected in an increase in searches for stock trading podcasts. Utilizing Google search data, CMC Markets ranked various podcasts by popularity.

The top-ranked podcast is InvestED, hosted by hedge fund manager Phil Town and his daughter Danielle, attracting over 1,600 searches per month. In joint second place with 1,400 monthly searches are Animal Spirits, hosted by wealth manager Michael Batnick, and Mad Money, presented by money manager and TV host Jim Cramer.

The online stock trading sector experienced significant growth during the Covid pandemic, leading to increased activity on trading platforms such as Robinhood and rising valuations in tech stocks. However, by the second half of 2022, some of this interest began to wane, and previously inflated valuations for stocks like exercise bike manufacturer Peloton either plateaued or fell dramatically.
