Sberbank, the largest banking institution in Russia, has been directed by President Putin to enhance collaboration with China in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) services.
This directive was reported by the Russian state news agency TASS, which noted that Putin emphasized the importance of working closely with the People’s Republic of China on technological research and development initiatives in the AI sector.
This push for cooperation comes in response to ongoing sanctions imposed by Western nations following Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, which have significantly impacted access to essential technologies. Notably, leading global microchip manufacturers have suspended their exports to Russia.
In December, Putin announced an initiative to align with BRICS nations, including China, to establish an AI Alliance Network. This network aims to counterbalance the technological superiority of the United States and other Western powers.
Earlier this year, Sberbank’s CEO, German Gref, acknowledged the institution’s challenges in sourcing graphic processing units, which are vital for advancing AI technology.
This approach is not unprecedented for Putin, as he has previously sought partnerships with BRICS countries to create alternatives to establish banking systems and infrastructure, including proposals to develop substitutes for the international payment system SWIFT.
