PayPal Introduces Global Integration with Local Wallets

PayPal has announced a series of global partnerships aimed at connecting some of the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets on a unified platform, starting with interoperability between PayPal and Venmo.

Connecting nearly two billion users, launch partners include Mercado Pago, NPCI International Payments Limited (UPI), PayPal, Tenpay Global, and Venmo. This initiative, named PayPal World, will link domestic wallets to millions of businesses worldwide, revolutionizing how people send money and shop online, in stores, and through AI agents across borders.

For example, an Indian national in the U.S. can simply click the PayPal button at checkout to access the UPI icon and complete the transaction using their local wallet.

Alex Chriss, president and CEO of PayPal, commented, “The challenge of moving money across borders is incredibly complex, and yet this platform will make it simple for nearly two billion consumers and businesses. We believe the changes we are announcing today have the potential to be a real game changer over time. We can’t wait to welcome many more global partners, wallets, and their users soon.”

Utilizing open commerce APIs, PayPal World is set to launch this fall, ensuring all partners are interoperable with PayPal and Venmo.

For the first time, PayPal and Venmo will be fully interoperable, enabling users to send money to each other globally, even if they aren’t using PayPal. This feature will be part of the PayPal World offering, simplifying cross-border payments to friends and family, akin to sending a text.

Additionally, starting in 2026, Venmo users will be able to shop online and in-store at millions of merchants worldwide that accept PayPal.
