Nationwide Commitments: All Branches to Remain Open Until 2030

Nationwide has confirmed its commitment to keeping all 696 of its Nationwide and Virgin Money branches operational until at least 2030, a significant decision amid a trend of bank closures across the industry.

This new pledge extends the organization’s Branch Promise by an additional two years and applies even in instances where a Nationwide branch is situated close to a Virgin Money branch.

This initiative comes as other financial institutions continue their efforts to downsize branch networks. Research from consumer advocacy group Which? indicates that over 6,500 bank branches have shut down since January 2015.

Nationwide reports that their latest branch network data shows an uptick in both branch usage and account openings through 2025, particularly in regions where Nationwide operates as the sole remaining bank branch. Recently, 33 new Nationwide branches have been designated as the last bank standing after nearby banks closed their doors, bringing the total to 133 locations in the UK where Nationwide is the only branch available.

Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide, stated: “Branches are essential for our customers, local communities, and the vitality of our High Streets. That’s why we remain committed to keeping our branches open while also enhancing our online and telephone services.”
