Monzo Experiences Service Disruption Affecting Customer Payments

Thousands of Monzo customers experienced payment issues on Tuesday due to a technical glitch in the digital bank’s app.

Customers began reporting problems on Downdetector around 10:00 AM, with approximately 2,500 incidents logged. Almost 75% of these issues were related to “mobile banking,” while the remaining 25% concerned “funds transfer.”

Monzo attributed the disruption to a “technical issue,” which necessitated operating the app in backup mode. While this impacted some features, the bank confirmed that the problem was resolved by around 12:30 PM.

Many customers took to X to express their frustration over being unable to access their accounts or reach customer support. One user tweeted, “@monzo any idea how long before you are back online gotta pay rent 😅 and unable to and even your phone lines are down.”

A Monzo spokesperson explained: “Due to a technical issue, we were unable to process some card payments and outbound bank transfers for a brief period earlier today. To ensure customers could continue making payments as usual, we switched to our backup systems, which can handle 99.9% of transactions. Customers were still able to make bank transfers, card payments, ATM withdrawals, check their balances and transactions, freeze their cards, move money between accounts and Pots, and contact us for assistance.”
