Monzo Appoints Conor Walsh from Cash App as CEO for US Operations

UK digital challenger bank Monzo has appointed Conor Walsh, the former global product head at Cash App, as the new CEO for its US operations. Walsh, who spent over six years at Square’s Cash App, will spearhead the company’s product, strategy, and growth initiatives in the US.

This appointment signifies a new chapter for Monzo in the US market, which officially exited its beta phase in early 2022 after several years of groundwork. In late 2019, the firm enlisted TS Anil, then Visa’s global head of payment products and platforms, to guide its US expansion and pursue a banking charter. Following Anil’s transition to oversee UK operations in 2021, Carol Nelson took charge of the developing US market. However, after the abandonment of their license application, Nelson departed the company the subsequent year.

With Walsh now at the helm, he is tasked with enhancing the team by recruiting additional tech talent and advancing the current product, which includes money management features and a contactless debit card.

“I’m thrilled and honored to join Monzo,” said Walsh. “I’m a long-time admirer and am excited about the huge opportunity to further expand our product and mission in the US.”

Anil expressed his enthusiasm as well, stating, “I’m delighted to welcome Conor to lead our strategy and growth in the US. He brings the perfect mix of skills to lead the team as we build the best product for the American customer and grow our US business.”
