Mastercard has approved the first cards for issuers that comply with the new EMVCo contactless specifications, which are designed to safeguard against attacks from both traditional and quantum computers.
Experts have long warned about the potential for quantum computing to undermine current security protocols. In response, Mastercard has collaborated with the global standards body EMVCo to incorporate quantum-resistant Enhanced Contactless specifications into its card programs. This initiative aims to counter the possibility of cybercriminals using quantum computing to breach encryption defenses.
Ajay Bhalla, president of Cyber & Intelligence at Mastercard, stated, “By integrating quantum-era technology into contactless payments, we are taking significant steps to future-proof security and privacy protection. These new cards offer enhanced peace of mind while ensuring a seamless transition for consumers and merchants from the existing contactless experience.”
The new cards are designed to be compatible with current acceptance, network, and issuer infrastructure, and they are available from Giesecke+Devrient and Thales.
