Marqeta has unveiled an innovative initiative focused on sustainability by introducing recycled cards aimed at mitigating its plastic footprint.
The company’s card issuance platform will now allow clients to select physical cards crafted from 43% recycled materials, significantly lowering the environmental impact associated with traditional plastic cards. Additionally, Marqeta has partnered with social enterprise rePurpose Global to further minimize its plastic footprint, a collaboration projected to offset the production of approximately 34 million cards.
Cornershop, the Latin American grocery delivery service recently acquired by Uber, will be the inaugural client to use Marqeta’s recycled card offerings.
Jason Gardner, Founder and CEO of Marqeta, emphasized, “This move represents a crucial milestone towards our ultimate objective of achieving plastic neutrality. It is imperative that we, as a company, commit to being responsible environmental stewards. By empowering our customers to reduce their plastic impact, we simultaneously address our own.”
