Lloyds Banking Group is responding to increasing demands for enhanced safeguards in the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies by appointing Magdalena Lis as the new head of ‘responsible’ AI.
This appointment follows the earlier recruitment of Dr. Rohit Dhawan, a former AWS executive, as the director of AI and advanced analytics in August 2024. Dr. Dhawan oversees a dedicated team of 200 specialists, including more than 30 PhD holders, at the bank’s Centre of AI Excellence.
In her role, Lis will concentrate on improving Lloyds Banking Group’s array of products and services while instituting the essential controls and safeguards. With over 15 years of experience in AI, she has previously advised the UK Government on responsible AI strategies and most recently served as Head of Analytics and Data Science at Toyota Connected Europe.
Lis holds a PhD in Computational Linguistics (AI) from the University of Copenhagen’s Centre for Language Technology and has authored 12 peer-reviewed publications, including works focused on transparency in AI systems.
Dr. Dhawan commented, “Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform banking, and we are committed to investing in talent to stay at the forefront of this evolution. While we explore the capabilities of Generative AI to enhance offerings for our customers, it is paramount that we implement this technology ethically and safely. Magdalena’s extensive experience in AI will be crucial to our transformation, and I look forward to collaborating with her.”
