Klarna Introduces Carbon Footprint Insights for 90 Million Users

Klarna, a leader in the buy now, pay later space, is set to enhance the shopping experience by integrating carbon footprint calculation tools from Doconomy, a Mastercard-backed initiative. This collaboration will empower consumers to understand the emissions associated with their purchases.

This effort aligns with Klarna’s 1% pledge, which aims to allocate $10 million towards projects focused on combating climate change and biodiversity loss. The company has also set an ambitious goal to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030.

As part of this initiative, every transaction processed through Klarna’s platform will include a carbon footprint calculated using Doconomy’s Åland Index. This feature will be accessible to an estimated 90 million customers, including 18 million active users of Klarna’s app each month.

Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of Klarna, emphasized the importance of transparency in consumer choices: “Just as we see labels for fat, sugar, and salt in our food, CO2 emissions should be equally visible. This information should not be considered a luxury but rather an essential aspect of every shopping experience. It’s vital for consumers to have the tools they need to make informed decisions that positively impact the environment.”

Additionally, for those wishing to contribute further, Klarna is introducing a donation integration in its app through the tech platform Milkywire. This feature will enable users to support projects funded by the firm’s climate awareness fund.
