Key Takeaways from Our Recent Nordic Event

As we gear up for the NextGen Nordics conference on April 25th in Stockholm, we’re sharing a series of insights into the key topics and speakers featured at this event.

To kick things off, here are the five biggest stories that have marked the Nordic payments landscape since NextGen Nordics 2022:

  1. Swedish Banks to Commence Testing of P27
After two years of preparation, banks connected to the Swedish mobile payments system, Swish, announced in June 2022 that they would be ready to test the P27 platform by the end of 2022. Supported by Danske Bank, Handelsbanken, Nordea, OP Financial Group, SEB, and Swedbank, P27 aims to create a unified, high-quality payment platform across the Nordic countries. The conference will host three panels focused on P27, offering insights into its progress and future goals.

  2. Silicon Valley Bank Expands to Sweden
In September 2022, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) UK announced its continued Nordic expansion by establishing a representative office in Stockholm, following its office in Denmark. This move is designed to strengthen SVB’s investment in Sweden’s innovation sector through debt financing, venture capital, and private equity.

  3. Vipps and MobilePay Receive EC Approval for Merger
The European Commission approved the merger between MobilePay and Vipps, two significant players in Nordic mobile payments, after the withdrawal of Finnish partner Pivo due to competition concerns. The new entity, launched on November 1, 2022, surpassed one billion transactions in December 2022.

  4. Cashless Denmark Records a Year Without Bank Robberies
Denmark celebrated 2022 as its first year without any bank robberies, highlighting the success of its cashless society initiative. From 221 bank robberies in 2000 to fewer than 10 annually from 2017 onwards, this milestone was praised for alleviating the strain on bank employees.

  5. Lunar Raises €35 Million Amid Economic Challenges
Danish neobank Lunar successfully raised €35 million for its Nordic expansion and to drive profitability. Although its attempt to acquire Norwegian Bank, Instabank, fell through due to insufficient capital, Lunar’s effort to broaden its presence in Norway and enter the Finnish market continues.
