Hackers Make Off with $17 Million from Uganda’s Central Bank

Hackers have successfully breached the Central Bank of Uganda’s firewalls, resulting in the theft of $17 million from Treasury accounts.

The attack is attributed to a clandestine group of hackers known as “Waste,” based in Southeast Asia. Local newspaper reports indicate that the funds were transferred in September into two accounts located in Japan and the UK. This operation appears to have involved some degree of insider knowledge, implicating several bank employees in the scheme.

The bank has managed to recover slightly more than half of the stolen funds and is currently awaiting a police report regarding the incident.
