Google Wallet is making its debut in India, while the existing Google Pay app will continue to handle all payment transactions in the country.
The Wallet app will provide users with access to boarding passes, loyalty cards, event tickets, public transport tickets, gift cards, and more. Over 20 brands, including Air India, Domino’s, and BMW, are among the launch partners.
Indian users will still need to use the separate Google Pay app for NFC and UPI payments. This approach differs from most other countries, where Wallet replaced Google Pay in 2022. Initially, both apps were offered in the US, but Google discontinued Pay earlier this year.
Additionally, Google Pay has recently partnered with India’s NPCI to expand the widely-used UPI payment system to other countries.
