Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and chief executive of Inflection AI, expressed in an interview with the Financial Times that the United States should leverage its chip leadership to establish minimum global standards for artificial intelligence.
Suleyman emphasized that tech companies must commit to the same pledges made to the White House by major AI firms earlier this year. He stated, “The US should mandate that any consumer of Nvidia chips signs up to at least the voluntary commitments — and more likely, more than that.”
The Biden administration has broadened restrictions on Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices’ AI chips, extending them beyond China to include certain countries in the Middle East.
Suleyman’s remarks come in light of recent warnings from UK MPs, who cautioned that the country’s ambition to take the lead in global AI regulation could be jeopardized by proposed new laws set to be introduced in November.
