G7 Officials Focus on AI Regulation

G7 officials are set to convene in Japan on May 30th to address the challenges presented by generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT. This meeting follows the group’s recent establishment of an intergovernmental forum named the “Hiroshima AI Process,” aimed at facilitating discussions on the expanding use of AI tools.

In a joint statement released after their previous gathering, the G7 acknowledged the urgent need to evaluate both the opportunities and challenges associated with generative AI, which continues to gain prominence across various countries and sectors.

Takeaki Matsumoto, Japan’s communications minister, indicated that the upcoming meeting will feature the inaugural working-level discussions focused on AI. Topics for consideration will include intellectual property rights, the spread of misinformation, and the governance of these evolving technologies.

This initiative forms part of broader global efforts to regulate AI. Notably, the European Parliament has made significant strides in advancing its AI Act, with recent votes pushing for heightened transparency in the workings of AI models like ChatGPT.

As the chair of this year’s G7, Japan aims to spearhead conversations regarding the responsible utilization of generative AI technology. The G7’s AI working group will collaborate with the OECD and the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) to formulate recommendations for heads of state by the end of 2023.
