Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, known for developing the generative AI platform ChatGPT, has found a new opportunity at Microsoft just days after being ousted by OpenAI’s board of directors.
Altman, alongside co-founder Greg Brockman, who previously served as OpenAI’s president, will spearhead a research initiative focused on artificial intelligence at Microsoft. In a recent announcement on X, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Altman and Brockman would be “joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.” Nadella expressed enthusiasm for equipping them with the necessary resources to ensure their success.
Altman and Brockman’s departures from OpenAI were the result of a board review process that concluded Altman had not been consistently transparent in his communications with the board. This lack of candor reportedly undermined the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities, leading to a loss of confidence in his leadership.
Initially, it was announced that Brockman would continue as interim president while Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati would step in as CEO until a permanent replacement was designated. However, the recent developments at Microsoft have cast doubt on this arrangement.
It’s worth noting that Microsoft is a major financial supporter of OpenAI, which adds an intriguing dimension to this evolving narrative. In response to the significant changes, Altman simply remarked on X, “the mission continues.”
