Former Mastercard Latin America and Caribbean regional head Carlo Enrico has invested in Pomelo, an Argentinian payments infrastructure firm. Enrico, who spent over 12 years at Mastercard, including his role as an executive committee member, will also join the Pomelo board.
Pomelo, founded by veterans from Mastercard, Mercado Pago, and Naranja X, helps clients launch credit, debit, or prepaid card businesses across multiple countries within weeks through a single technological integration. The company operates in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru, serving hundreds of corporate clients such as banks, multinational companies, and tech startups like Rappi, Bitso, Stori, Lulobank, Nomad, Payjoy, Ripio, and AstroPay.
In January, the company raised $40 million in Series B funding, distinguishing itself from the US card startup of the same name. Enrico stated on LinkedIn, “Pomelo’s state-of-the-art solutions enable card issuers to modernize their tech stack and accelerate their go-to-market across a fast-growing and increasingly sophisticated region.” Pomelo CEO Gaston Irigoyen added that Enrico, having experienced the limitations of the financial services ecosystem in the region, views Pomelo as a transformational company and intends to work closely with the team to reshape payments infrastructure in Latin America.
