The card scheme-owned EMVCo technical body is exploring how global specifications can accommodate the anticipated increase in AI-driven agentic payments.
Payment and technology leaders are preparing for the emergence of agentic commerce, where AI agents act on consumers’ behalf to initiate and complete transactions. EMVCo highlights that this trend introduces distinct challenges related to how transactions are initiated, authenticated, and secured.
“As industry adoption and innovation accelerate, a globally interoperable and scalable approach may be beneficial in realizing trusted agentic payments for consumers, merchants, and issuers,” the organization notes.
Patrik Smets, chair of the EMVCo executive committee, states, “EMVCo developed the global specifications that facilitate trusted card-based payments for billions of consumers and businesses worldwide. There is now a clear opportunity to collaborate with industry participants to extend this experience and support agentic payment solutions.”
