Deutsche Bank to Introduce Wero Payment Acceptance

Deutsche Bank’s Merchant Solutions division is integrating Wero into its payment acceptance systems ahead of the mobile wallet’s launch in Germany.

Launched to tap into the potential of account-to-account (A2A) payments, Wero is part of the European Payments Initiative aimed at helping banks compete with Visa and Mastercard. It has already registered 40 million users across its initial markets.

Initially focused on peer-to-peer payments, Wero is now set to target online checkouts. Deutsche Bank will enable clients to accept Wero in Germany, as well as in Belgium and France after the launch, with plans to expand to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in the future.

As an EPI shareholder, Deutsche Bank emphasizes that this offering isn’t restricted to traditional merchants; it will also cater to market integrators and aggregators, including fintechs and payment service providers.

“By integrating Wero, we will provide our clients with a modern European alternative to existing international payment solutions—one that is secure, efficient, and fundamentally European. It will become one of our core local payment methods,” says Corina Metternich, head of business product payment methods for Europe at Deutsche Bank.
