Australia’s CommBank has successfully migrated all of its data to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its AI deployment efforts across the organization.
In February, CommBank signed a strategic five-year agreement with AWS, solidifying its position as the bank’s cloud provider. This partnership played a crucial role in launching the CommBiz Gen AI-powered messaging service for business banking clients, a project that transitioned from concept to production in just six weeks.
The Gen AI messaging service significantly enhances customer experience by facilitating quicker payments. It utilizes information from over 80 CommBiz user guides, FAQs, and other resources to deliver relevant answers through natural language processing.
Rodrigo Castillo, CommBank’s Chief Technology Officer, noted that the integration of cloud modernization alongside development and operational security efforts has doubled the bank’s capacity to implement changes in production.
The migration process to AWS, initiated in July 2024, involved a systematic transfer and comprehensive testing of more than 61,000 data pipelines.
Terri Sutherland, who leads data platforms at CommBank, highlighted the significance of this migration: “Transitioning our entire data resources to the cloud marks a pivotal achievement for the bank. Daily, we leverage AI to make approximately 55 million decisions designed to benefit our customers and employees. With over 2,000 AI models analyzing around 157 billion data points, CommBank stands as one of the largest corporate users of AI in Australia.”
