Citi and U.S. Bank Customers Gain Exclusive Early Access to Mastercard Agent Pay

Citi and US Bank customers will be the first to access Mastercard’s agentic payments technology prior to a global rollout.

Unveiled in April, Mastercard’s Agent Pay aims to enter the potentially lucrative agentic payments market. Citi and US Bank Mastercard cardholders will be the first to experience AI-enabled shopping, with all US users expected to be included by the holiday season, followed by a global launch.

Earlier this year, Mastercard illustrated the technology using the example of someone planning a birthday party. An AI agent can curate a selection of outfits and accessories from local boutiques and online stores based on the host’s style, venue ambiance, and weather forecasts. The agent can make purchases and recommend the best payment methods based on user preferences.

Additionally, Mastercard has introduced an Agent Toolkit to aid AI assistants and related tools in accessing and interpreting its API documentation.

“AI-powered payments aren’t just a trend — they’re a transformation,” says Craig Vosburg, Chief Services Officer at Mastercard. “Payments must be native to the agentic experience. We’re building the infrastructure for a new generation of intelligent transactions, where consumers and developers can empower AI agents to act on their behalf with trust, transparency, and precision.”
