Blackhawk Network (BHN) has partnered with Visa to transition its network-branded prepaid products, which are currently distributed through third-party retail channels, from plastic to paper-based materials.
This significant initiative will commence in the United States, Canada, and Australia later this year, affecting over 350 million open-loop and multi-branded products produced by BHN, along with an estimated 700 million additional third-party cards.
BHN asserts that this change will yield a notable environmental benefit while ensuring minimal disruption for merchants, issuers, brands, and customers. Talbott Roche, CEO and President of BHN, stated, “Our mission is to lead the prepaid and gift card industry’s transition from plastic to more sustainable and responsibly sourced materials—and we’re making progress.” He further emphasized, “Partnering with prominent brands like Visa is instrumental in fostering a more sustainable payment card ecosystem.”
