BBVA to Educate Senior Executives on Generative AI

BBVA has launched a new training initiative designed to equip its top executives with essential skills in generative AI (GenAI) to enhance overall productivity. This program, developed in collaboration with the University of Navarra, specifically targets the bank’s 150 senior leaders.

The curriculum, crafted by the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute (DATAI) at the University of Navarra along with BBVA’s internal teams, focuses on leveraging GenAI to refine strategic decision-making and streamline daily operations for executives.

Iván Cordón, head of innovation at DATAI, emphasized that the course addresses evolving needs stemming from AI’s recent integration into businesses. “This program provides a comprehensive overview of GenAI, allowing participants to examine its tangible effects on corporate management. Through various case studies, learners will discover practical applications, ranging from automating routine activities to enhancing complex operational processes,” he stated.

Since the program’s introduction in April, over 300 employees have successfully completed the GenAI course offered by the University of Navarra. This educational pathway is part of a broader collaboration established between BBVA and the university in 2020, aimed at training employees and fostering research in data science. Other initiatives under this partnership include a Master’s Degree in Big Data Science and additional coursework focusing on Big Data.

Elena Alfaro, who leads the GenAI adoption efforts at BBVA, remarked, “With this new training program, we aim not only to boost our executives’ productivity and creativity but also to enhance their capability in adapting to new technologies. This understanding of GenAI will empower them to lead change effectively within their teams, ensuring that our organization maximizes the benefits of this technology for both present and future challenges.”

Recently, BBVA expanded its artificial intelligence workforce, increasing the number of staff dedicated to AI to over 400 and launching new ‘AI Factories’ in Mexico and Turkey. This initiative follows the bank’s milestone achievement in May, when it became the first European bank to partner with OpenAI, distributing 3,000 ChatGPT Enterprise licenses among its employees.

Among the innovative projects underway at BBVA’s AI Factory are the development of a fully interactive virtual assistant aimed at simplifying user experiences across digital channels, as well as ‘copilot’ tools designed to enhance managerial efficiency and improve customer relationship management.
