Barclays is experiencing an IT issue that has left some customers unable to access their accounts online or through the mobile app.
On the first payday of the year for millions in the UK, combined with the deadline for self-assessment tax returns, many users have reported problems on Downdetector.
Reports of issues with the Barclays app began on Friday morning, and complaints continued to come in via the bank’s social media channels well into the evening. In response to one frustrated customer late in the day, a bank representative on X stated, “we don’t have a timescale on when this will be fixed.”
Barclays acknowledged on X that customers were experiencing “trouble” with various app features, online banking, telephone support, and payments in and out of accounts, although payments themselves were completing successfully. The bank assured users that cards and cash machines were functioning normally, though some customers on social media disputed this claim.
With HMRC warning that individuals could face £100 fines for missing Friday’s deadline to file self-assessment tax returns, Barclays has reassured customers that it has been in contact with the tax authority and that no user will be “left out of pocket.”
