Ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic have not diminished the enthusiasm of bunq’s environmentally conscious users. A notable 81% of the online community for this Dutch challenger bank is advocating for a ‘SuperGreen’ initiative that commits to planting trees for every €100 spent with a bunq card.
Founder and CEO Ali Niknam reports that strong community involvement has highlighted an unwavering desire among users to create a greener planet. In fact, he observes an increasing passion for sustainability during these times.
Many bunq customers recently expressed a desire to plant trees for all card transactions. They continue to seek ways for businesses to support their eco-friendly lifestyle choices, which remains unchanged despite the pandemic.
Responding to this feedback, bunq has introduced a SuperGreen subscription tier for Premium and Business users, allowing them to plant trees with every card transaction made. Users can conveniently track the number of trees they’ve planted in real time through the bunq app.
Having launched the bunq Green Card last November, which plants a tree for every €100 spent, the initiative has already seen over 100,000 trees planted within its first four months. The bank now aims to extend this effort across all bunq card offerings, with the goal of planting at least 500,000 trees by the end of 2020.
“The impact of the bunq Green Card has been significant,” Niknam remarked, noting that the trees planted contribute to a reduction of 30.8 million kg of CO2, equivalent to over 32,000 flights from Paris to New York.
bunq asserts that participating in this payment initiative can enable users to achieve carbon neutrality in under two years. The trees, planted in partnership with Eden Reforestation, are designed to capture approximately 308 kg of CO2 over their lifetime, allowing users to offset their annual carbon emissions.
bunq is presently operational in 30 European markets.
