Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England, has joined the Board of Directors at Stripe, a leading company in the web payments sector.
Since its inception a decade ago, Stripe has become an essential infrastructure provider, processing hundreds of billions of euros in payments for businesses across more than 140 countries. Following a significant $600 million Series G funding round in mid-2020, the company is now exploring an initial public offering (IPO) that could valued at $105 billion.
Carney remarked, “The landscape of commerce has transformed dramatically over the past ten years. Stripe has played a pivotal role in fostering this new digital economy, offering innovative and robust payment solutions to enterprises of all sizes. This work has not only facilitated global trade but has also accelerated economic growth.”
In addition to his role at Stripe, Carney is actively engaged in combating climate change as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action. Stripe anticipates that Carney’s expertise in sustainable finance will enhance its global climate initiatives, empowering numerous businesses to invest in emerging carbon removal technologies.
John Collison, co-founder and president of Stripe, stated, “As we embark on our next decade, Mark’s exceptional background in high-level finance and central banking will be immensely beneficial in our mission to enhance the digital economy. His commitment to improving settlement systems and addressing climate change resonates with our values. We are thrilled to welcome him to our Board of Directors.”
