Spain’s CaixaBank has recently taken a significant step toward sustainability by launching the issuance of cards crafted from recycled plastic and biodegradable materials.
This initiative is part of the bank’s commitment to environmental responsibility as it phases out the use of virgin plastic in card production. CaixaBank currently has over 18.8 million cards in circulation and anticipates that 85% of the new cards issued in 2021 will feature sustainable materials. By year’s end, around five million of these eco-friendly cards are expected to be in use.
The majority of the new cards will utilize recycled PVC, derived from waste generated in the construction sector. Additionally, some cards will incorporate PLA, a biodegradable substance made from organic sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
In a further effort to enhance sustainability, CaixaBank will also transition to using laser technology for printing cardholder names and details. This innovative approach minimizes waste and contributes to a longer lifespan for the cards.
