Owners of the new Fiat 500 electric vehicle will soon be able to earn cryptocurrency as a reward for eco-friendly driving habits, which can be utilized in a specialized online marketplace.
Fiat’s parent company, Stellantis, has partnered with UK-based cryptocurrency start-up Kiri Technologies to launch this innovative rewards program. The name “Kiri” is derived from the Japanese word for the Paulownia tree, known for its remarkable ability to absorb ten times more carbon dioxide than most other plants.
As users drive, they can accumulate KiriCoins—each valued at two euro cents—for every kilometer traveled, all managed through a Fiat smartphone application. The coins can be exchanged for vouchers available at a range of well-known retailers, including Amazon, Apple Music, Netflix, and Spotify.
Moreover, drivers who achieve top eco-scores, rated from 0 to 100 based on their fuel-efficient driving practices, will be eligible for additional incentives. The system collects driving data in real time, allowing for accurate energy consumption tracking and scoring.
Gabriele Catacchio, Fiat’s e-mobility manager, remarks, “This initiative represents an eco-loyalty program that encourages responsible driving. It’s a unique concept within the automotive industry, as most loyalty programs reward purchases rather than sustainability. This model could extend to encompass many environmentally friendly actions in the future, generating even more KiriCoins.”
The eco-rewards program is anticipated to launch following the first deliveries of the Fiat 500 electric car to the UK in late spring.
