Berlin-based payments platform for SMEs, Unzer, has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to support the rollout of the Wero digital wallet.
Launched late last year to leverage account-to-account (A2A) payments, Wero aims to help European banks compete with Visa and Mastercard. It has already enrolled 40 million users in its initial markets.
Wero allows A2A transfers using SEPA Instant Credit Transfer protocols, enabling users to send money within 10 seconds via phone numbers, email addresses, or QR codes.
Unzer joins other industry leaders like Worldline, Nexi, and Nuvei in the effort to extend Wero’s capabilities beyond P2P payments into e-commerce and point-of-sale transactions.
As a principal member of EPI, Unzer is set to facilitate connections to Wero services for merchants in Germany and Austria. These services will start with e/m-commerce in 2025 and will be accessible through Unzer’s integrated platform, UnzerOne, streamlining payment acceptance across all sales channels without the hassle of multiple providers.
"Joining Wero is an exciting step for us and the merchants we support. It enables us to offer a local, secure payment method designed for Europe. We’re proud to help launch Wero and integrate it across all channels," says Robert Bueninck, CEO of Unzer.
