Nationwide Cards Accredited by the Royal National Institute of Blind People

Nationwide Building Society has introduced innovative ‘dot and notch’ embossed bank cards, crafted from recycled materials and certified by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

These cards are the first to feature the RNIB’s ‘Tried and Tested’ logo, ensuring accessibility for users with visual impairments. The unique ‘dot’ design allows members to easily differentiate between credit and debit cards, while the ‘notch’ indicates the correct orientation for insertion into card machines and ATMs.

Constructed from 85% recycled plastic, these cards will be issued to all members routinely, promoting a standard of inclusivity. Additionally, Nationwide’s ATMs are equipped with audio functionality that verbally conveys information displayed on the screen, further assisting individuals with sight loss.

David Clarke, director of services at RNIB, remarked, “Simple enhancements to bank cards can significantly impact those with sight loss. We commend Nationwide for implementing these measures, which contribute to a more inclusive and accessible banking experience for their blind and partially sighted customers.”
