Emerging Technologies to Watch: Metaverse and Decentralized Identity Highlighted

Research by Gartner has identified 25 emerging technologies that are essential for understanding and are expected to significantly influence both business and society over the next 2 to 10 years.

Gartner emphasizes that these innovations will play a crucial role in assisting CIOs and IT leaders in driving digital transformation initiatives. The technologies are categorized into three primary themes: evolving immersive experiences, accelerated artificial intelligence automation, and optimized technology delivery.

Melissa Davis, VP analyst at Gartner, notes, “While all these technologies are in early stages of development, some are even at an embryonic phase, introducing a level of uncertainty in their evolution. The embryonic technologies carry higher risks for implementation but also offer substantial potential benefits for early adopters, setting them apart from Gartner’s established strategic technology trends.”

Within the realm of immersive experiences, the 2022 Gartner Hype Cycle highlights several critical technologies, including:

  • Decentralized Identity: Empowering users to manage their own identities through technologies like blockchain and digital wallets.
  • Digital Humans: AI-driven interactive representations of real individuals.
  • Internal Talent Marketplaces: Platforms facilitating the movement and exchange of in-house skills and talents.
  • Metaverse: A collective virtual shared space integrating physical and digital realities.
  • Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs): Unique digital assets verified using blockchain technology.
  • Superapps: All-in-one applications that streamline multiple functionalities.
  • Web3: The decentralized version of the internet focused on user ownership and control.

The second category focuses on four key areas of accelerated AI automation poised to revolutionize organizations in the coming years: causal AI, foundation models, generative design AI, and machine learning code generation.

The final category addresses technologies that support firms in their quest to build a digital business through enhanced technology delivery. These tools offer valuable insights that optimize product, service, and solution delivery alongside sustainability efforts. Examples mentioned by Gartner include cloud sustainability, computational storage, minimum viable architecture, and platform engineering.
