Citigroup has appointed Robert Lighthizer, the former US Trade Representative, as a senior advisor focused on global trade matters.
Lighthizer’s role will be part-time. A representative from Citi commented, “Given our extensive global reach, Ambassador Lighthizer’s expertise in the complexities of international trade is immensely beneficial to us and our clients.”
As reported by Reuters, Lighthizer has recently engaged with Citi clients to address trade agreements and tariff strategies implemented during the Trump Administration. Major financial institutions are increasingly seeking guidance on navigating the current economic climate shaped by Trump’s global tariff policies.
During his tenure in the Trump administration, Lighthizer was instrumental in enacting tariffs against China and in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) involving Mexico and Canada.
Despite ongoing tensions in the US-China trade relationship, there are indications of potential easing, with reports from Chinese media suggesting that the Trump administration initiated discussions to resume trade talks.
