Damoon, a subsidiary of Tether with a majority stake held by Northern Data Group, has acquired over 10,000 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs, amounting to an investment of nearly €400 million.
Taiga Cloud, part of Northern Data Group, announced that this purchase of NVIDIA H100 GPU Pods—recognized by NVIDIA as the most advanced chip available—strengthens its status as Europe’s leading independent cloud service provider for NVIDIA hardware. Taiga Cloud now boasts a total of over 19,000 NVIDIA H100, A100, and RTX A6000 GPUs.
The installation of the H100 GPUs will proceed according to a strategic deployment timeline, with customer access anticipated to commence in late Q4 2023. Taiga aims to have more than 10,000 H100 GPUs operational by mid-2024, a move that will enhance its Cloud Service Provider (CSP) offerings.
Taiga Cloud plans to structure its NVIDIA H100 GPU infrastructure into pods containing 512 GPUs, interconnected into groups of four pods (totaling 2,048 GPUs) utilizing NVIDIA BlueField DPUs and the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand platform.
This significant investment is intended to facilitate the training of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the development of generative AI solutions.
“We view this investment in Northern Data Group as a groundbreaking step into new technological realms,” remarked Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s Chief Technology Officer. “It reflects our dedication to responsible growth and innovation while maintaining the integrity of Tether’s reserves.”
Karl Havard, Managing Director of Taiga Cloud within Northern Data Group’s Cloud Division, noted, “Unlocking the full potential of AI and machine learning is becoming a priority for businesses across all sectors. Our substantial investment in NVIDIA’s sought-after H100 GPUs positions Taiga as a leader in delivering these innovations and supports our vision of making computing power readily available to organizations throughout the region.”
Taiga Cloud, based in Europe, offers access to the largest clean-energy-powered, scalable AI and machine learning compute capacity in the region, enabling clients to achieve data sovereignty while adhering to European AI and ML compliance standards.
