Klarna is leveraging data from Clarity AI to highlight environmentally responsible brands to its extensive community of over 150 million active shoppers.
The initiative will target the consumer electronics sector, a significant contributor to global emissions. It is projected that this industry will account for approximately 14% of worldwide emissions by 2040, a substantial increase from the current 3%. Both the energy consumed during the use of electronic devices, as well as their production and disposal, pose considerable environmental challenges.
A recent report from the Q3 2022 Klarna Shopping Pulse revealed that 62% of U.S. consumers prioritize sustainability when purchasing electronics. Additionally, more than two-thirds of those surveyed believe it is crucial for brands to actively address climate change and utilize recycled or sustainable materials in their products.
Through the integration of Clarity AI’s data, Klarna will offer shoppers insights into sustainability via ‘brand badges.’ These indicators will reflect whether a company has lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to similar firms, utilizes a greater share of renewable energy sources, has established climate change policies, and demonstrates transparency in its climate-related reporting.
Salah Said, Klarna’s head of sustainability, remarked, “In 2021, we launched the CO2e emissions tracker, marking one of the largest initiatives aimed at raising awareness about carbon footprints. Now, we are enhancing this effort by equipping our 150 million shoppers with trustworthy and transparent sustainability metrics for electronics brands. This initiative enables consumers to gauge the impact of their purchases and make more eco-friendly decisions moving forward. Together, Klarna and Clarity AI are empowering consumers to ‘vote with their wallet’ for a more sustainable future.”
