How Westpac is Leveraging Generative AI to Accelerate Software Development

Westpac has successfully trained 800 of its engineers in utilizing generative AI tools to accelerate software development processes.

In an interview with Westpac Wire, the bank’s Chief Technology Officer, David Walker, highlighted the collaboration between Westpac engineers and industry partners focused on artificial intelligence. This partnership aims to establish guidelines for the responsible use of AI technologies while also fostering relationships with universities and tech companies to innovate new AI-driven tools.

“Responsible AI is essential,” Walker remarked during a podcast discussion. “Our priority is ensuring safety and ethical usage of AI technologies.”

Following a successful pilot program, Westpac now has more than 800 engineers employing generative AI tools, resulting in a notable 22% increase in the daily volume of code produced.

Walker anticipates that 2024 will bring a significant advancement in “intelligent banking,” with the integration of AI enhancing customer experiences through the development of new products and services. “This will unlock a wealth of additional opportunities for us in the future,” he stated.

In addition to AI, Walker shared his thoughts on emerging trends in cloud computing, wearable technology, and strategies for addressing the global climate crisis, providing a comprehensive overview of the technological developments to watch for in the upcoming year.
