Lloyds, TSB, Halifax, and Nationwide Among UK Banks Experiencing Declines on Payday

British financial institutions TSB, Bank of Scotland, Nationwide Building Society, Halifax, Lloyds, and First Direct have faced significant disruptions this morning, impacting customer payments.

Numerous customers have taken to social media to voice their frustrations, with outage-tracking platform Downdetector reporting more than 4,400 complaints regarding Lloyds and 3,600 for Halifax as of 8 AM. Both Halifax and Bank of Scotland are part of the Lloyds Banking Group.

The service status page for Nationwide indicated that there are delays with payments both to and from accounts, with transactions currently queued. Although customers can initiate payments, there is a chance they may not process immediately. However, the bank confirmed that internal transfers, card transactions, and direct debit services remain operational.

A representative from Nationwide addressed the issue, stating: “We have identified a technical glitch that has resulted in delays for some incoming and outgoing payments. We are currently processing the queued transactions, and we appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to resolve this. There is no need for customers to resend any payments, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

The spokesperson assured customers that they can continue making faster payments, using their cards for purchases, accessing online banking, and withdrawing cash from ATMs.

First Direct has updated its website to inform users that online payment services are currently unavailable.

Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, and TSB have publicly acknowledged these payment issues via their official social media accounts.

A statement from Bank of Scotland read: “We understand that some clients are experiencing difficulties logging into online banking and the app. We apologize for the inconvenience and are making every effort to restore normal service.”

Similarly, TSB communicated: “We are aware of login issues affecting our mobile app and internet banking, and we’re diligently working on a resolution. An update will be provided shortly.”

Lloyds and Halifax echoed these sentiments regarding the service interruptions.

Notably, this is the second consecutive month in which major banks have encountered payment issues on payday, with similar disruptions reported with Barclays, Lloyds, Capital One, and Halifax at the end of January.

Update: As of 12:00 PM GMT, a spokesperson from Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed that the previous delays have been addressed, and online banking services are now functioning normally.
