Nets and SoftPay Help 7-Eleven Recover from Ransomware Attack

Nordic payments operator Nets and Softpay swiftly equipped all 7-Eleven stores across Denmark with an emergency tap-to-pay SoftPOS kit following a cyberattack that disabled the chain’s payment and checkout terminals.

In early August, 7-Eleven Denmark faced a ransomware attack that affected all 176 stores. The attackers locked down cash registers and payment terminals, prompting the company to temporarily close all locations nationwide.

To respond to this emergency, the chain collaborated with Nordic payment processor Nets and Softpay, providing checkout staff with Samsung Android phones and an app that enabled tap-to-pay functionality.

Craig Jacoby from Softpay stated, “The advantages of having a hardware-independent payment solution, whether as the main option or a backup during emergencies, are clear in this instance. I am incredibly proud of the dedication and teamwork demonstrated by the Softpay team in supporting 7-Eleven during this challenging time.”

7-Eleven is not alone in facing operational shutdowns due to ransomware attacks; last year, the UK supermarket chain Spar experienced disabled checkouts at over 300 branches, and the Swedish branches of Co-Op had to close after a similar incident.
