Legendary actor Simon Callow has teamed up with NatWest to narrate real-life Halloween horror stories centered on the dangers of fraud.
The star of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" recounts three chilling tales based on actual cases of frightening fraud and deceit:
- Twisted Fate reveals how fake cryptocurrency investment schemes can deceive individuals, leading them to lose their hard-earned money through false promises.
- Romance is Dead exposes a seemingly enticing romance scam that underscores the modern risks associated with online dating.
- The Final Demand dramatizes the frightening realities of an invoice redirection scam, illustrating how a small business owner is targeted by a fraudulent "supplier" claiming that their payment details have changed and demanding a new invoice.
NatWest is sharing these tales as a free downloadable PDF, following a survey that indicates a staggering three-quarters of Brits have fallen prey to scammers, with victims losing an average of £350.50 each. The survey also highlights that 85% of respondents are concerned about becoming victims of scams, while half believe they could do more to protect themselves. As technology progresses and scams become increasingly sophisticated, 60% of respondents report having encountered scams on social media. Additionally, three-quarters of Brits feel that social media platforms should take more action to combat fraudulent activities.
Callow commented, “It’s frightening how advanced scams have evolved. I find it increasingly difficult to stay aware of the dangers, making it vital for us as a community to educate ourselves about the new types of scams emerging to avoid being victimized."
