Bank-owned Swedish digital identity service provider BankID is set to launch a digital ID card.
Stored in the BankID app, this card will function similarly to a physical ID, containing the holder’s photo, name, personal identity number, and age. Additionally, it will feature a QR code that businesses can scan to verify credentials.
While the digital ID card won’t replace traditional identification for travel and government-related matters, it will serve purposes such as age verification for alcohol purchases and parcel collection at post offices.
BankID, owned by seven banks, is currently used by over eight million Swedes and is supported by more than 6,000 businesses and organizations for identification and document signing.
