German prosecutors have charged two additional Wirecard executives with wrongdoing leading up to the collapse of the previously celebrated fintech company.
Alexander von Knoop, the former finance chief, and Susanne Steidl, a board member responsible for product development, face multiple counts of embezzlement, according to a statement from the state prosecutor’s office. Von Knoop is also charged with aiding and abetting embezzlement.
Prosecutors allege that the two executives approved questionable loans and other payments despite clear warning signs. The prosecutor’s office noted that “Wirecard AG suffered losses of several hundred million euros as a result of all these breaches of trust.”
Von Knoop and Steidl are now among several high-ranking executives facing criminal charges, including CEO Markus Braun, deputy finance chief Stephan von Erffa, and Wirecard’s Asia representative Oliver Bellenhaus.
