Bank of Ireland Attributes Latest Glitch to “Technical Issue”

Bank of Ireland (BoI) experienced another outage on Friday when its mobile banking app was down for approximately four hours.

Starting around noon, customers were unable to log into any of the bank’s apps or websites. In addition, the disruption affected online transactions involving BoI credit cards, as the verification process was not operational.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the bank attributed the issue to an unspecified “technical issue.” The statement expressed, “There was a technical issue this afternoon which required us to take it offline while we fixed the problem. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers today.”

This incident is not an isolated one; BoI has faced multiple technical challenges in recent years. A significant technology outage in August led to long queues at BoI ATMs due to a false rumor that customers could withdraw money without their accounts being debited. The country’s finance minister, Michael McGrath, criticized the bank for experiencing “too many such instances in recent years.” Additionally, BoI was fined €24.5 million in 2021 for shortcomings in its IT systems.
