Worldline Expands into Embedded Payments Sector

Worldline is entering the embedded payments sector through a partnership with Online Payment Platform (OPP), a provider of payment technology for platforms and marketplaces.

This collaboration, available across Europe, merges OPP’s payment technology with Worldline’s expertise in acquiring, acceptance, and point-of-sale capabilities. The integration aims to offer platforms and marketplaces a comprehensive suite of turnkey features that facilitate user sign-up, sales transactions, and fast payments while managing operations across multiple currencies.

Supporting all major payment methods, the initial deployment includes features like split payments, advanced escrow solutions, and mediation handling, all within a fully regulated framework. The platform is set to expand first into the UK and Switzerland, following Worldline’s recent acquisition of an EMI license for the UK, with future enhancements planned, including Tap on Mobile and Point of Sale integrations.

Worldline’s move into embedded payments comes in response to a challenging outlook for its core merchant payments business. The company reported a significant net loss of €817 million for 2023, contrasting with a €211 million profit from the previous year.

Marc-Henri Desportes, CEO of Worldline, remarked: “Our partnership with OPP reflects our commitment to innovation in payments. By combining OPP’s robust platform capabilities with our extensive acquiring expertise, we are delivering an embedded payments solution that provides platforms and marketplaces with a unique pathway to integrate and leverage new payment opportunities.”
