Over 200 organizations, including Nvidia, OpenAI, Apple, JP Morgan, and Amazon, have agreed to participate in the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) as part of the Biden Administration’s efforts to regulate artificial intelligence.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced that the consortium will be hosted at the US AI Safety Institute and will bring together officials, academics, developers, and industry regulators to provide guidance on the advancement of AI products and services.

Raimondo emphasized the government’s critical role in establishing safety standards and developing tools to mitigate risks while harnessing the potential of AI. She stated, “President Biden directed us to pull every lever to accomplish two key goals: set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem. That’s precisely what the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium is set up to help us do.”

The Biden Administration has been actively advocating for AI regulation, emphasizing transparency laws and standards for Big Tech, as well as calling for watermarking of AI-generated content. An executive order on this topic has already been released, and steps are being taken to address issues such as the spread of AI-generated false images and deepfake videos through proposed federal legislation.

Additionally, Amazon has committed $5 million in compute credits to the USAISI in support of this initiative, aiming to foster the development of global public policy grounded in safety and security.

Bruce Reed, White House Deputy Chief of Staff, highlighted that “to keep pace with AI, we have to move fast and make sure everyone – from the government to the private sector to academia – is rowing in the same direction.”
