The governments of the UK and US have signed what they describe as the first international bilateral agreement to regulate the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The deal was signed in Washington by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. Donelan emphasized the necessity of this agreement, stating that the next generation of AI models could be “complete game-changers,” with their full capabilities still uncertain.
The agreement promotes the exchange of research expertise between the newly established AI Safety Institute in the UK and its US counterpart, which is yet to begin operations. The goal is to mitigate risks related to AI, including the independent evaluation of private AI models from organizations.
While the UK government has indicated that it does not plan to impose broad regulations on AI, the US has taken a firmer approach. Simultaneously, the EU is preparing to introduce the EU AI Act, which will implement regulations on the development and use of AI models.
